At 6’5” and 245 lbs, Cam Newton is most certainly a new force of nature to be reckoned with; a sport’s legend in the making. Having excelled in throwing for a historic 4,051 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns his rookie year, the 23 year old Carolina Panthers Quarterback is already making his mark in the NFL. Snagging the cover of the coveted September issue of GQ (with Tim Tebow gracing a 2nd cover) was just another coupe for this powerhouse jock and son of a minister. Here’s a young man who, noticing a couple of poor decisions, has realized early on that life is about choices and that “I’ve got to grow up.” How many of us were this enlightened at 23?

GQ’s September issue also brings with it, along with Cam’s & Tim’s interviews/pictorials, a new direction in digital media that they’ve been touting for the last several issues; A truly interactive experience. Well, it’s finally here. After downloading their new app, and leafing through the issue, you’re encouraged to click on the numerous GQ LIVE tabs throughout the issue to see videos that are sure to enhance your reading, and now viewing, experience. Check it out.

House of Wax: Harry Slatkin

latkin & Co. candles dominated the premium, home-aromatherapy landscape throughout the 90's; Harry Slatkin's products were everywhere. His 1870's Beaux Arts mansion, which could easily be referred to as The House That Wax built (beeswax, that is) is prominently featured in the August issue of Harper's Bazaar.  The Upper East Side mansion, which he shares with his wife and 13 year-old twins, showcases a treasure trove of antiques and modern pieces alike. I'm always interested to see how "creatives" decorate their homes and live in their spaces and overall, I really do like this Manhattan high-rise, with its grey and white walls.

Having recently purchased the venerable British clothing company, Belstaff, along with Tommy Hilfiger, it'll be interesting to see if he'll be able to re-fresh the 1924 fashion line; doing for it,  what he did for candles.

The Perfect Gift: Father's Day

With Father's Day less than a week away, here are a few gift suggestions beyond the common (and quite tired) tie/shirt combo:

1. The new Lytro camera is more than a marvel; it's revolutionary. It truly takes the guesswork out of photography for the average man. Unlike any other camera, it allows you to focus an image AFTER you've taken it. No more blurry or missed shots because you were still trying to focus long after the action stopped. For the neophyte or the professional, this camera is a must have. Even though I'm not a father yet, I'd gladly welcome this as a Father-to-be gift.  ($399-$499)

2. Any man worth his wears a belt, so why not make it this elegant Engine-turned Slide Belt Buckle, in Sterling Silver, from Tiffany & Co?
Throw in a reversible black/brown leather belt and he's more than good to go. ($225.00)

3. This Gucci checkers set is definitely for the father who has everything. The buttery-soft brown leather would be a beautiful addition to any library.  ($4,350.00)

4. L.L. Bean's Hunter Tote Bag (Zippered or Open-Top) is the perfect accessory for the father looking to upgrade his style, but doesn't care for the messenger bag/murse look. Manly and rugged, it can take him from a camping trip (it has a water resistant lining) to the gym to an overnight stay at a friend's house.  ($25-$39)

5. Sure you good buy that special man in your life a classic wooden case to hold his cufflinks and watches, but why? This Faux Zebra Box (Cowhide)  from Mecox is surely more sophisticated and stylish and a welcome addition to any gentleman's bedroom dresser. ($360-$440)

Interiors: Alfredo Parades

I picked up the April issue of Architectural Digest because of the city views shown through the grand, iron-framed windows of the apartment shown on the magazine's cover. It wasn't until I read the article that I realized it was the home of Alfredo Parades, an Executive Vice-President and Chief Retail Creative Officer at Ralph Lauren. Having a passion and admiration for all things RL, he sounds like someone worth knowing.

Working for Ralph Lauren, who obviously has a most specific design aesthetic, it's rather good and interesting to see how an Interior Designer/Creative Director  vamps his own space. While I'm not usually a fan of exposed beams, these compliment the interior perfectly; accenting everything from the floor coverings to the furniture. Perfect harmony throught.

I'm not sure if I'm more crazy for the silver tub or the unobstructed city views from the balcony; both perfect spots for a bachelor to entertain. Job well done!

I was born in the country, but brought up in the big city, with hopes of always maintaining the charm, wit and character of a southern,      sophisticated
gentleman. In my goal to live more  passionately & purposefully, here are just a few things  that  I've  learned and experienced along the way, making my journey more interesting, and more importantly, easier.
