During winter holiday 2007, a few family members and I met in New York to celebrate my cousin's, Korby, 40th birthday. Coming from California, where the tempature was about 70 degrees when I boarded the plane, it was great to experience the seasonal change on the east coast; Manhattan. On our second day there, while everyone else decided to sleep in, my cousin Dena and I decided to get up early to go ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Not only had I not been on regular skates in about 15 years, but I had never been on ice skates. Well, the good thing about trying something new and possibly making a fool of one's self is that, since you're away from home. who will know? (Dreaded YouTube!)
In the last few years skating rinks have made there way to Southern California: Pershing Square in Downtown and Universal City to name two locations. This year, Ice at Santa Monica, marks its fourth year of joining in the fun. I definitely want to check this one out, if for no other reason than to experience the juxtaposition of ocean, sand and outdoor ice skating, (oh and palm trees) all within such a short stroll from one another. Ah, the beauty of living in Los Angeles.
This is a perfect outing for a date. (especially, since now that I'm an expert in this art form. Translation: I can now stand up on my skates without having to skim the railing.) And, of course, there's always indoor ice skating in Pasadena at the Pasadena Ice Skating Center.
